Rita Begum, who is currently the Labour and Cooperative Candidate for the West Central Constituency on the London Assembly, has a strong track record standing up for cycling in her role as Councillor for Maida Vale ward on Westminster Council.

She campaigned to extend the Santander Cycle scheme into her ward, with the Maida Vale cycle dock outside Dundee House the result of her persistent lobbying.

As part of Labour’s team in Westminster she has long campaigned for the introduction of a 20 mph speed limit on residential roads to help protect people walking and cycling, something the Conservative Council has only recently fully implemented.

In 2020 she worked to get the new Bike Repair Station installed outside the Pavilion in Paddington Recreation Ground.

Rita backs Sadiq Khan’s plans to make it even safer and easier for residents to cycle around London and for more sustainable transport solutions to help tackle the climate crisis and clean up the city’s polluted air.

Rita Begum said “If I am elected to the London Assembly on 6th May I will do far more than my Conservative opponent to help people to cycle and walk around our city. I will work with Sadiq Khan and our local boroughs to help transform transport in London.”
