Construction is set to start next week after a Westminster Council Committee endorsed the Labour Council’s decision to build protected cycle tracks and improve pavements and crossings for pedestrians on George Street.

The meeting was called after Conservative Councillors “called-in” the George Street section of Cycleway 43, in an effort to halt a scheme they themselves initiated when in power only a few years ago. However, after a 45-minute hearing where Councillors had the opportunity to question the Labour Cabinet Member in view of the public, the Committee voted 4-3 in favour of taking no action to delay the decision.

Labour Councillor Max Sullivan, Cabinet Member for Streets said: “The Committee’s decision was a vote of confidence in our plans to deliver a safer, more pleasant street for walking and cycling on George Street. And it’s desperately needed — Westminster has the highest number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads of any London borough. We’ve engaged with residents and made the scheme better as a result. Meanwhile, the local Conservatives have spread misinformation and fear, now opposing the scheme they themselves initiated when they were in power. This Labour Council was elected on a mandate to make walking and cycling safer and more pleasant, and we make no apology for getting on and delivering it.”

Construction will now proceed on the section on George Street, between Edgware Road and Gloucester Place, with a targeted completion date of Spring 2026. Another section of the same route between Bayswater Road and Edgware Road is already under construction.
