20mph roadsign on Harrow Road, Westminster
20mph roadsign on Harrow Road, Westminster

The Conservative government is considering a roll-back on 20mph speed limits for our local streets. Show your support for safer streets and call on Rishi Sunak to scrap his plans to take power away from local communities by signing the petition.

Why it matters

People hit by a vehicle at 20mph are around five times less likely to be killed than at 30mph.

In London 20mph speed limits have:

  • Reduced fatal and serious collisions by 25%
  • Reduced collisions involving vulnerable road users by 36%
  • Reduced collisions involving people walking by 63%

The figures are clear. 20mph limits in London have saved lives. It is also proven that 20mph does NOT add to congestion.

Additionally, residents will continue to enjoy calmer, cleaner neighbourhoods that will encourage more walking, cycling, and active travel that is healthier for everyone and their families, friends and visitors.

Labour in Westminster has fought for years to bring in 20mph zones to our city, but Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives are planning to turn back the clock.

We call on the Prime Minister to:

  • Cancel his plans to encourage speeding through our local streets.
  • Stop taking power away from local councils, working with local people to set speed limits in our area.
  • Spend his time delivering his long-promised, but delayed Transport Bill that will regulate dockless e-bikes, end the scourge of pedicabs, and give local authorities powers to enforce the rules on speeding and engine idling.

Save our 20mph streets, save lives
