Westminster Labour Group is delighted to formally introduce Liza Begum who has been selected Labour’s candidate for the council by-election that will take place on the 6th of May at the same time as the London Mayoral Election. It comes following the sad resignation Andrea Mann, primarily for family care reasons.

Liza has been a tireless and visible campaigner on local issues. Her campaign to save Walden House and Cundy Street Flats received national media attention and it resulted in a victory for residents: winning the right to return for long established local social housing
residents.

Liza was born to a working-class British Bangladeshi family and has lived in Pimlico her whole life. Born in Westminster Hospital she attended St Barnabas Church of England primary school and Pimlico Academy. She is embedded in the local community. Liza has over a decade of experience behind her working for the Imperial Hospital NHS Trust.

Liza is dedicated to helping residents. During the pandemic she has been a volunteer with Westminster Mutual Aid, supporting the most vulnerable in our community. Liza knows the issues that matter to local people and understands its diversity. She has a proven track record of working for local people and campaigning on the importance of council housing at the heart of our communities. She is someone who is determined to work for and with all residents.

Liza Begum said “Churchill is my home and I want to be able to do more to support my local community by representing it on the council. I will work hard, listen to local concerns and fight to make sure resident’s voices are heard by the council.”

Cllr Adam Hug, Leader of Westminster Labour Group, said “Liza would be a fantastic advocate for the people of Churchill ward and a wonderful addition to the Labour team across Westminster.
