There has been an 11.6 per cent increase in cycling in central London, including Westminster, between 2023 and 2024, according to the latest figures released by Transport for London. Travel in London Overview report for 2023/24 (see pages 509 – 574), shows that Inner London has seen a 4.2 per cent increase and outer London has seen a 3.8 per cent increase.
In 2024, the number of daily cycle journeys in London increased to an estimated 1.33 million journeys per day, up by five per cent from 1.26 million in 2023, and up by 26 per cent since 2019.
Walking remains the most frequently used mode of travel in London, accounting for around 39 per cent of all trips by London residents.
In Westminster, the huge growth of e-bikes has meant that in July 2024 there were 675,000 e-bike journeys in Westminster, compared to 300,000 in July 2023.
To better manage the huge growth in e-bikes, Westminster Council has created a city-wide network of over 360 e-bike parking bays to which we are adding to regularly. This month TfL started to designate e-bike parking bays on TfL routes for the first time.
Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Cabinet member for City Management and Air Quality, said:
“We are committed to improving cycling infrastructure to make cycling safer and more pleasant. We have increased the number of secure cycle hangars and bike stands and are introducing more cycle lanes. We have given free cycling lessons to over 4,000 residents, students and people working in Westminster over the past three years. Our e-bike parking network is the largest and most comprehensive in London. We know there is more to do and the big increase in cycling in Westminster this year shows that our efforts are working.”
