A major new development in Maida Vale is nearing completion, delivering modern homes and care facilities for Westminster residents.
The redevelopment of the former Carlton Dene care home site on Carlton Vale will provide 65 new extra-care homes for older people, alongside 22 new family-sized council homes for social rent. The development replaces outdated buildings with high-quality homes designed to meet residents’ needs today and tomorrow.
The extra-care building has been named Barrie Taylor House, in honour of the late Councillor Barrie Taylor, who served the local community for nearly 30 years and was widely respected for his commitment to residents.
The original Carlton Dene care home, built in the 1970s, no longer met modern standards for care and closed in 2020. Residents were supported to move to alternative accommodation while plans were developed to deliver a modern facility designed around independence, dignity and high-quality care.
The new Barrie Taylor House will provide self-contained apartments for older residents, enabling people to live independently while having access to care and support if they need it. The building will also include shared facilities such as a communal lounge, activity rooms and landscaped outdoor areas designed to encourage residents to socialise with their new neighbours. There’s also a café which will be open to residents and the general public.
Alongside the extra-care homes, the redevelopment also delivers 22 new council homes for families, helping more local people stay in Westminster and strengthening mixed communities in Maida Vale.
Cllr Ellie Ormsby, Westminster City Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Renters, said:
“Barrie Taylor House represents a major investment in high-quality council homes and care for our residents.
“Labour in Westminster is committed to delivering the homes and services our communities need. By building modern extra-care housing alongside new council homes for families, we’re creating stronger neighbourhoods where people can live and thrive at every stage of life.”
Cllr Nafsika Butler-Thalassis, Maida Vale councillor, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Public Health and Voluntary Sector, said:
“Extra-care housing like Barrie Taylor House is a vital part of how we support older residents to live well for longer.
“These new homes will give people independence, dignity and security, with care and support available when they need it. I’m proud that Westminster Labour is investing in Maida Vale to deliver modern facilities that put residents’ wellbeing first.”
The redevelopment of Carlton Dene is part of Westminster Labour’s wider programme to deliver high-quality council housing, improve support for older residents and create fairer communities across the city. It’s Labour’s 16th 100% affordable development delivered since 2022 and we will deliver 1500 affordable homes by 2035.
