Westminster’s Labour administration has taken action to put renters first with the launch of its new Private Rented Sector (PRS) Tenant’s Charter, marking an important step in Labour’s mission to create a fairer, more secure housing system for everyone calling Westminster home. The Charter has been written with the invaluable contribution from our own residents and other PRS focused organisations.

In a city where around 44% of households rent privately, too many people are unaware of their rights when faced with issues such as damp, disrepair, unfair treatment and unlawful rent increases. The Charter is designed to help solve this, tipping the balance back in favour of residents by providing clear, accessible information about their rights and setting out the standards they should expect from landlords.

The Charter seeks to tackle what matters most to residents in the PRS, from mould and illegal evictions to rent abuse, signposting renters to the council’s support services when things go wrong. It’s part of a broader Labour commitment to challenge inequality in the housing market and improve people’s lives in Westminster.

The Charter has been designed with inclusivity and accessibility at its core, ensuring that every resident can understand their rights and get the help they need.
