Labour-run Westminster Council has launched the borough’s first playground action plan to set out how playgrounds across the borough will be developed over the coming years, with a key focus on improving inclusion.

Last year, Westminster opened it’s first first-ever accessible playground at Alfred Road (W2), co-designed with local parents and children. This new plan sets out which other playgrounds in the borough will be improved and developed over the coming years.

Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child says every child has the right to relax, play and take part in cultural activity.

Play is how children explore, imagine and connect with the world, it is important for child development (physical, emotional and social) and to support parents/carers and children with opportunities to get active outside.

Westminster has 68 playgrounds which play a significant role in providing opportunities for play, alongside our parks, youth clubs, mugas, leisure centres, community centres and community hubs, and play streets.

We want Westminster to have the best play facilities possible so that it’s a healthy and happy place for families and children.

The plan includes a new commitment to inclusive design, ensuring playgrounds are accessible and enjoyable for children of all abilities and backgrounds.

Future improvements will prioritise inclusive equipment and thoughtful design so that more children can play together. By embedding inclusivity into new projects and upgrades, Westminster is creating play spaces where every child feels welcome and able to join in.

The plan also sets out which playgrounds will be improved over the coming years. These include Avenue Gardens playground in Queen’s Park, Pimlico Gardens in Pimlico South, Causton St in Vincent Square, Lisson Green in Church St, Lupus St in Pimlico South, Paddington Street Gardens in Marylebone, Porchester Square in Bayswater, Westbourne Green Open Space in Westbourne and Drury Lane in St James’.
