10 reasons why Labour Westminster has the cleanest streets in London
- Our team of 700 street sweepers and refuse collectors clean 8,400km of streets every week and collect 180,000 tonnes of waste and recycling every year.
- We have 1,500 pavement bins for recycling, together with 160 on-street micro-recycling centres for paper, glass, plastic, food, textiles, and small electronics.
- Our enforcement activity targets rubbish dumpers and fly-tippers with over 2,000 fines issued for waste offences and over 5,500 warnings for waste offences this year.
- Our recycling rate continues to rise, driven partly by the Council’s roll-out of separate food waste collections, including a separate on-demand food waste recycling service available in Soho, St James’s and Marylebone.
- Over 113,000 properties now have access to the Food waste recycling service, and more than 5,300 tonnes of food waste has been collected to date. A new garden waste service started in March 2026.
- Currently 87% of the recycling collected by the Council is recycled within the UK.
- Our campaign to make dog owners more aware of their responsibilities to pick up dog poo has seen a 28% reduction in dog fouling across 11 ward areas, and a 19% reduction in dog bag disposal.
- Our 200-waste collection and recycling vehicles will soon be all-electric, cutting out harmful emissions and reducing fuel costs.
- Our service has 85% public satisfaction for street cleansing and 87% for the refuse collection service.
- Surveys by Keep Britain Tidy of almost 1,000 separate locations in Westminster show that the percentage of streets failing the Council’s high standards for litter has fallen from 4.99% in 2021/22 to 3.85% in 2025/26.
Don’t let the Conservatives ruin it by cutting vital refuse collection, street sweeping and recycling services.
