Westminster Labour unveils major canalside improvements to make Westbourne greener, safer and more accessible.
Westminster Labour this week celebrated the unveiling of major improvements to the Westbourne Green stretch of the Grand Union Canal and a brand new piece of public art under the Westway. These projects of the North Paddington Programme are delivering long-overdue investment to parts of the city that were neglected for far too long under the Conservatives.
The works bring long overdue improvements to Westbourne Green Canalside, a previously underused area. The Council has worked with local organisations, network rail, the canal and rivers trust and the mayor’s good growth fund to deliver a vibrant, accessible and greener public space. Improvements include improved walking and cycling routes, better lighting, new planting, sustainable drainage, upgraded play spaces designed with local children and new seating.
In additional to these improvements, Labour-run Westminster Council has delivered a striking new 120-metre mural beneath the Westway. This was co-created with local young people and marks the first major public art commission under the North Paddington Cultural Activation Strategy.
Cllr Cara Sanquest, Cabinet Member for Communities, said:
“This is exactly what a Labour-run council is about: investing in communities like Westbourne ignored by previous administrations and creating public spaces that work for the people who live here. We are backing public spaces, supporting community-led art, enhancing nature, and making this city greener, safer and more inclusive for everyone.”
Cllr Adam Hug, Leader of Westminster City Council, added:
“The Westbourne Green Canalside improvements mark a major milestone in Westminster Labour’s programme to revitalise North Paddington, bringing meaningful, community-driven investment to the heart of the city. As ward councillor for Westbourne I’ve been campaigning for improvements to the canalside for years and I’m delighted to see the improvements we’ve been able to make in power for our local community.”
