Labour Westminster Council has today launched a major public consultation on ambitious plans to transform Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus and Haymarket into greener, safer and more accessible places for everyone who lives in, works in or visits the West End.
The proposals, brought forward by Westminster Council in partnership with The Crown Estate, would create nearly 35,000 square metres of new public space, equivalent to six football pitches.
Headline features include:
- Making Regent Street St James’s completely traffic-free, creating a new pedestrian boulevard from Piccadilly Circus to St James’s Park.
- Expanding the pedestrian area at Piccadilly Circus by 1,000 square metres, creating a more welcoming and flexible civic space.
- Converting Haymarket to two-way traffic to unlock wider pavements, safer crossings and improved side streets.
- Transforming the entire length of Regent Street with wider footways, new seating, planting and safer cycle infrastructure.
- Reimagining Waterloo Place and Pall Mall East as part of a network of traffic-free streets and cultural spaces.
Councillor Geoff Barraclough, Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Development, said:
“This Labour administration is determined to future-proof the West End and make it work better for everyone. These plans will deliver the biggest transformation of Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus in over a century – creating space for people, supporting local businesses and preparing the city for the challenges of climate change.”
“We’re asking everyone who lives in, works in or visits the West End to take part in the consultation. This is a rare chance to shape the future of one of the most iconic parts of London.”
The consultation is open until 10 August 2025. For more information and to share your views, visit: https://futureofregentstreet.commonplace.is
