Westminster Labour is proud to announce a major step forward in improving digital connectivity across central London, with the deployment of new 5G small cell technology — a project led and enabled by Westminster City Council in partnership with telecoms providers EE and Ontix.
Under Labour leadership, the Council is tackling the long-standing issue of poor mobile coverage in some of the capital’s busiest areas. The rollout of 80 5G small cells is a direct result of Westminster Council’s efforts to modernise street infrastructure and negotiate commercial access that benefits residents, visitors and businesses.
Councillor Geoff Barraclough, Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Development, said:
“This initiative has been driven by the Council because we know how important good connectivity is to everyday life — whether you’re a resident working from home, a business relying on mobile payments, or a tourist navigating the city.
We’re proud that Westminster is leading the way on modern infrastructure — and doing it in a way that protects the unique character of our streets.”
The new small cells are being mounted on Council-owned lamp columns and have been carefully designed and painted to blend in with existing street furniture, preserving the heritage of Westminster’s iconic public realm. They are being installed in areas where traditional mobile networks have struggled, relieving congestion and delivering faster, more reliable service.
By proactively working with providers and setting strict design and placement standards, Westminster Council has ensured that the rollout is both effective and respectful of the city’s urban environment.
This work is part of Westminster Labour’s broader commitment to digital inclusion, making sure that all communities — not just those in the commercial heart of the city — benefit from next-generation connectivity.
