A report published this week by Shelter reveals that London has the highest concentration of homeless young people (up 33% since 2014).
Westminster Council has one of the highest rates of homelessness of children – 1 in every 12 children are homeless. The Council has recently approved its new City Plan and in that it reduced the allocation of new housing for social housing.
Councillor Guthrie McKie, Shadow Housing Spokesperson, says:
”These figures are shocking. The Labour Group put an amendment down at the Council Meeting in November to increase the allocation in the City Plan for social and affordable housing. The Tories opposed it. It is no surprise when several Tory Councillors are big players in the private landlord market. The current regeneration plans will not provide enough social housing to meet the demands of homelessness in the borough.”
