Westminster Cathedral area.

We have asked the Council to investigate the unsatisfactory situation of increasing numbers of homeless people sleeping in the area around the Cathedral. We have urged the Council to work closely with the police and charitable organisations to offer practical assistance to the homeless wherever possible. Residents say:

“At the moment the front of the Cathedral has some security that move people along in the mornings and is then washed down and cleared for tourists and the like. The side streets around the Cathedral are not attended too and the smell of urine is quite unpleasant. We also have issues with homeless people living in the area in tents, shop and business doorways. Last night we counted 28 people sleeping rough of which we calculate to be a 50% rise in 4 years.”

Faulty Street Lights – Update

We have received the following update from the Street Lighting Team:

“I would like to confirm that there is currently an issue with the lighting management system which controls the lighting on various streets and that our service provider FM Conway are in the process of changing the columns to photocells so that they react to the changing light rather than a centralised signal.I would also like to confirm a number of streets where there have been issues noted will also be converted by the end of November and they are as follows:

  • Little Smith Street
  • Great Peter Street
  • Romney Street
  • Marsham Street
  • Monck Street
  • Duke of York Street”
