ST JOHN’S WOOD ACTION REPORT – November 2018

News from Hussain Ahmed, Janet Seale and Liam Taggart, your St John’s Wood Labour Action Team

Finchley Road water main

We have been pressing Thames Water and the Council to speed up the repair works to the water main problems on Finchley Road

Violet Hill Gardens

We have asked the Parks Department to investigate this issue:

“I should be grateful if you could ensure a regular maintenance programme for the Gardens at Violet Hill. The children’s play area is safe and attractive; however, the grass and plant borders need attention and a bench requires repair. It may help to restrict the playing of ball games to allow the grass to regenerate.”

Finchley Road

We have asked the Council to investigate this issue:

“Outside Athena Court on the Finchley Road directly next door to St John’s Wood underground station is a telephone kiosk covered in graffiti and cobwebs which evidently has not been maintained for many, many months. I attach some photos. I walk past the telephone kiosk most days and wonder why this eyesore directly next to the station has been neglected in this way. I do not know who is supposed to maintain it – the Council, BT or another provider? It gives an awful impression to those approaching the station and I am surprised that no one has raised this with you before.”

St John’s Wood Terrace

We have asked the Council to investigate this issue:

Can you let Westminster rubbish removal that some more rubbish bags have been dumped again outside 87 St John’s Wood Terrace NW8. They have been there for about 2 weeks and are very unsightly.?

Abbey Road/Carlton Hill

We have asked the Council when the horse chestnut that was felled on the corner of Carlton Hill and Abbey Road will be replaced as was promised.

Marlborough Place

We have again written to the Council about the overgrown hedge by the bus stop at Marlborough Place. The Council say:

“I’ve written to the frontagers with instructions for the vegetation to be pruned back to the boundary. If this doesn’t have the desired effect the council’s contractor will carry out the work. “

Northwick Close

We have asked the Council to prune an Ivy tree which is blocking a street light in Northwick Close.

Lord’s Cricket Ground

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has submitted a planning application to Westminster City Council to redevelop the historic Compton and Edrich stands at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Cunningham Place/St John’s Wood Road

We have asked the Council to investigate this issue:

“The lovely red post box on the junction of Cunningham Place/St John’s Wood Road has been vandalised. Some low-life has painted/sprayed thick, green coloured rings around it. Could you kindly get the council to sort it out, please? “

Tourist tax – what you say

“A good idea if it generates income that could be used to re-furbish and maybe add extra public toilets over the borough. Extra bins around the West End and more staff for street cleaning etc, could enhance Westminster. Also if some could be used to set up youth schemes/work experience and grants for after-school clubs/adventure playgrounds could be re-instated, marvellous! If tourist tax was just to be accumulated to be sent to government coffers, not such a good idea.”

What you say

“Thank you as always.  Your summary is a great example for any local councillors to show just a fraction of the work you do for the community.”

“Thank you for this. I find your reports interesting and useful.”

“Thank you very much for your very informative newsletter.”

Please let us know if we can be of help or assistance on any local issues.
