Build social and affordable homes and improve housing services

If reelected Westminster Labour will build 1,500 social and truly affordable homes across Westminster by 2035 and provide responsive and high-quality housing services.

For decades the Conservatives failed to build the council and truly affordable homes our residents needed, whilst they closed local estate offices, locked the Council into underperforming 10 year contracts for repairs and major works and let standards in housing services decline.

Labour converted over 350 homes in the Conservative building pipeline that had been planned for private sale or for use as higher rent intermediate homes and converted them to council homes for social rent, with 660 social and key worker homes built over the last four years.  We re-opened four estate offices, scrapped insecure tenancies for council tenants and led a housing improvement programme to improve services- that led to the housing department being awarded the highest ranking by the Social Housing Regulator but we know there is much more that needs to be done.

If Labour wins on May 7th we will.

  • Build 1500 new social and truly affordable homes by 2035.
  • Scrap the inflexible 10-year housing contracts for repairs and major works such as with Morgan Sindall.
  • Introduce new smarter technology that flags any repair reported more than once and strengthen resident oversight of repairs performance.
  • Strengthen and modernise our housing CCTV to keep our Estates safe, with better cameras and faster downloads.
  • Fund a new independent advice service for both council and private leaseholders.
